Multi-function firewalls combine a number of protection mechanisms
in one device:
- intrusion protection (IPS)
This means that application-level threats can be handled by
the same device
that provides traditional network boundary security services.

With dedicated ASIC-accelerated hardware, FortiGate devices give high
levels of performance at an attractive price.
So multiple functionality
does not mean compromising on throughput; at the same time, it allows
for a range of devices covering all sizes of organization.
At the entry level, small and home offices with, say, 5 users can
enjoy full protection with a FortiGate-50 Antivirus Firewall than is
up and running in minutes.
In contrast, the FortiGate-5000 series is a family of chassis based
systems that provide a scalable platform for the largest enterprises
and service providers.
FortiGate Antivirus Firewalls and FortiOS firmware have received
certification for Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 4
Augmented (EAL 4+). This gives both public and private sector customers
assurance that these products have gone through a long and rigorous
testing process.
Note that Fortinet provides all the software running in its devices
rather than offering a collection of third-party applications.
